Last night I decided my PC was ready for critical WIn Updates.

I had a good working win2k installation done from scratch on a new HD.
SP4 was in place and several months of fine tuning the net connection
plus all extras was finished.

Stupid, stupid me.

I started Windows Update. A new Windows Update was needed, did that,
rebooted.

Run Windows Update again, IE6 was mandatory as win2k has IE5 only.

Did that, to my shock not only IE6 was installing but also Outlock
Express plus new MP, I never asked for the latter crap.

My shock grew even worse as scandisk started after reboot. IE6 had
changed the whole file structure in the root so that now things did not
match anymore, thus also WebScanx crashes 100% repeatedly at startup.

Alos the MP still was old 6.4, but all mu Favourites had been moved, now
it is impossible to Manage favourites as they lie so long way down from
what MP thinks is default so they disappear outside the open window,
non-resizable. Further all my Netscape bookmarks had been copied to some
root map.

Its a fucking mess, I hate MS even more after this. Last time they
totally destroyed my installation when I did Windows Update.


However, I did a FULL SYSTEM backup just prior this crap using the
backup wizard.

What is the probability that a SYSTEM only restore could FIX the problem
rather than making it worse? I assume that the win2k SYSTEM restore is
not compatible to the newer XP roll back?

Whats your best advice?

- Restore and pray?

- Uninstall MP and the Virus Protection and re-install again?
