View Full Version : Incremental Exchange Backup
=?Utf-8?B?RGFuaWVsIEdlbnRyeQ==?= Using "exchange aware" NTbackup that comes with SBS2003 I can perform online full (normal) exchange backups with no problem. However, if an Incremental exchange backup is performed it fails with the follwoing error: Error: SERVER\Microsoft Information Store\First Storage Group is not a valid drive, or you do not have access.
Other people have this same problem, but no one in the newsgroups has been able to answer this issue. I need to be able to perform incremental backup due to location of backup over ADSL connection. Can someone please help!

a possible reasion would be that you have curcular loggin enabled on the server.
You can not use this loggin type for incremental.

=?Utf-8?B?RGFuaWVsIEdlbnRyeQ==?= Thanks Michael, I beleive Circular Logging is already disabled. Well, atleast the tickbox to enable circular logging is not ticked. However, my understanding is it is the default to have it enabled, but it was already unticked when I first checked this....is there anyway of verifying that circulart logging is really disabled??
Or alternatively, any other suggestions?

an easy way to see is if you have LOTS of 5MB files :) If you see only about 4 then it is on. Ok, This should be set on the First storage group (if you havenot renamed it) from ESM. Note that if there is no tick on the (I think you said you already checked this) then maybe the exchange services have not been restarted since the change was made.
Altering this setting require the info storage server to be stop and restarted.

=?Utf-8?B?RGFuaWVsIEdlbnRyeQ==?= Ok, I finally have this resolved. I enabled circular logging and restarted exchange. I then disabled circular logging again, and restarted exchange again. It now works fine. However, I defintely had restarted exchange in the past, as the server has been restarted a few times. I beleive that the circular logging was on by default, but the tick box was never ticked.
FYI, this was a brand new build of SBS2003 with Windows Updated at build date (10 June 2004), plus Exchange SP1 installed before trying to configure Exchange backups.
