View Full Version : Spell checker gone funny

Bill
OE6 on W2K.

When spell check finds a wrong word the suggestions box seems to be
recycling, almost as if it keeps refreshing the suggestions list.

Any ideas what I need to do to fix this please?

Regards.

Jim Pickering
Do you mean your mouse keeps jumping about? If so, see the following:

Motive SmartBridge (MOTIVESB.EXE) was probably installed by your ISP to aid
in reporting connection issues. I would consider uninstalling this
application unless you use it. Alternatively open MSConfig (Start, Run and
enter MSConfig in the box and click OK), open the Startup tab and uncheck
"Motive SmartBridge".

Bill
The only files I have anything like that are motivedirectory.exe, so
presumably that is not the cause. And no the mouse does not jump around, it
is exactly as I have described; the list of words in the suggestions box
seems to be refreshing itself. It settles down after about 5 seconds or so.
The time that it takes to settle down seems to vary on how many suggestions
there are.

It has only started to happen recently and could have started when I moved
to Broadband recently, but I can only surmise.

Jim Pickering
Did you install any software from your new ISP? I've not heard of it
happening without SmartBridge installed but it's possible there may be other
culprits other there with other ISP installations of software.

Bill
As I was new to BB I just popped the CD in and let it have its head. I may
uninstall the lot and start again as I can't expect you to know what every
ISP is dishing out!!

Thanks anyway.

Yep - that was it. I can't tell you which one as I uninstalled a whole raft
of stuff. I can tell you that the ISP is BT.Yahoo and the uninstalled stuff
was effectively their customised version of Internet Explorer, some sort of
messenger and a few others things. I think there was BTY Communicator in
there, plus address completion untils and such. Anyway OE Spell Checker is
now performing as before.
Thanks again for the guidance.

Jim Pickering
Glad to hear it's now fixed. I never install ISP software since all I need
is the IP address or the info that they only serve DHCP. Armed with that, I
can set things up the way I want w/o any intrusive software they may use to
monitor what I do. Thanks for the feedback.
