I bought a new DVD Video Camera and I'm wondering how to import my footage from the DVD onto the computer using Movie Maker.... any ideas? All the instructions seem to talk about using video tape...

Is this new camcorder an analog one or a digital one?

If it's analog, you will have to purchase an analog capture card and use the
software that comes with it to capture the analog footage from the
camcorder. If it's a digital camcorder, the connection is via firewire.
Some PCs (newer ones) have firewire ports already built in, some do not in
which case you must purchase a PCI firewire card and install it. You then
use a firewire cable to connect the camcorder to the PC.

What are the files on the DVD this camcorder captures to? The files it
sticks on the little 3" DVD (If I am right about what you have there since
you give no model number) may not be compatible with MM, but maybe you can
convert them.

You can rip the DVDs and then import them into WMM, even though you might experience due to the MPEG2 source...

If it's a DVD camcorder, it _IS_ digital, but it is NOT _DV_.
It's MPEG-2 stored in the standard DVD video VOB file structure.

While it would be possible to capture from the analog
camcorder outputs, that would not preserve the digital
quality of the source material.

The best solution would be to "rip" the DVD to an MPEG-2
file, then import that into MM2. Unfortunately MM2 is
not compatible with *most* MPEG-2 decoders.

To get an MPEG-2 file from a DVD, I would use DVD Shrink
to back up the DVD to a single VOB file, then rename
that VOB file to something with a .MPG extension.
