I've been dealing with this same issue with our four month old Gateway
Media Center computer. You mention that some drivers allow video
capture and some don't. Is it likely that a driver upgrade would fix
this problem without disabling media center? The Gateway tech support
site just says that you can only capture cable or broadcast video.
Thank you for addressing this.

Hi Lee --

It's completely dependant on the driver manufacturer. MCE devices/drivers
are written with MCE scenarios in mind -- I don't have any information on
how important it is to the manufacturers to easily enable capturing in
*other* software programs. You could always try contacting the device
manufacturer and letting them know you are unhappy with the current
functionality....

In any case, it's generally a good idea to update your drivers when a new
set is advertised for your device.

Hope this helps!

Kristen--

Thank you for the prompt reply. I tried to find the "Media Center
Receiver Service" but all I could find was the Scheduler which I
disabled. It didn't help. My capture card is an Emuzed Maui III G
and I found "Movie Mill" on the Emuzed site. This works great so
far. I can capture video from my analog camcorder. It seems to
capture in MPEG 2 format so I'm not sure what will happen when I try
to edit in moviemaker. Hopefully I'll at least be able to convert my
home videos to DVD.

Thanks again,
Lee
