Win 2000 Pro; updates up to date (also using Office 2000, also up to date--or at least to within the last month or so). C:\ is NTFS; the remaining drives are FAT32.
The problem first appeared to me on 16 bit shortcuts (on Desktop and in the Quick Launch bar), and I notice that it affects ALL files that contain a ''Summary'' page on their ''Properties'' dialog box.
At one point, way back when, I added some data to the ''Summary'' page for a desktop shortcut to a legacy 16 bit program I still have on my computer. I added information on Title, Category, Comments, and Author.
I long ago deleted that shortcut. Now I can't get that data out of the Summary pages to ALL files (shortcuts to other 16 bit stuff, WinWord *.doc files, everything) It appears on the ''Advanced'' version of the Summaries as a selectable option, and if I try to delete it, the system deletes instead the real information that I would have put there from within WinWord (same for other Office Apps). I can, if I choose, add more lines into there that will also NOT come out, and that also appears as options on other files to which it was never intended to apply.
The folks over at the Word NGs had no explanation for it, and no good suggestions other than don't enter data into a files properties from WIN 2000; use only WinWord instead (this is a good idea so far as it goes, but doesn't help me with clearing up the garbage data).
A search of the registry for the offending text turned up nothing; a search of the C:\ drive, and later of the entire system for the offending text also turned up nothing. The problem has something to do with ''inheritable permissions'' (something I only barely understand). I have, however, discovered that if I disable and clear inherited permissions on the affected files, then the garbage data goes away (for that particular file anyway--but this means tinkering around with each new file I might create).
Anybody got any idea what's working wrong here? Where is this data kept? (It's obviously not kept in the files it affects.) How do I clear out the garbage? How do I prevent it from accepting more stuff it will never delete? Most importantly, how do I clear out the garbage?
