View Full Version : Only administrators can login to a stand alone Windows 2000 W2K box

First off - thanks to those who have mentioned the known fixes to this
problem - but none of those have worked. Thank you to everyone who is
reading this.

Problem: I can login to a Windows 2000 stand alone systems as long as
I am the administrator (or a user with admin priv.) When I create a
user, the user can press CTRL+AL+DEL to login... then a blank screen
comes up with a mouse curser on the screen. The user can press
CTRL+ALT+DEL to run a task like cmd.exe and use the command line to
perform the following fix (which I might add does not work).

Open Task Manager>File>New Task (Run). Type cmd.exe, and then press
ENTER. If necessary, change to the %SystemRoot% folder. This is
typically the Winnt or Windows folder. Rename the Shdocvw.dll file by
typing ren shdocvw.dll shdocvw.old. Restart the computer.
Note: Other older files that may cause problems with Explorer.exe or
the shell if they are located in %SystemRoot% folder: Browseui.dll,
Comctl32.dll, Comdlg32.dll, Mlang.dll, Ole32.dll, Oleaut32.dll,
Shdocvw.dll, Shell32.dll, Shlwapi.dll, Urlmon.dll, Wininet.dll,
Setupapi.dll.

I gave everyone full access to the WINNT folder under the C:\ drive and
that allowed users to login... but I cannot leave it that way (due to
the local security policies in my office) and I cannot reload the OS
either.

Thanks for the suggestion... but I am still having the problem... even
with the new security configuration file. I might just have to rebuild
the whole image.
