FORMAT is just asking you what you want the new label to be, it doesn't
matter what you type. Just hit enter and it will be blank, or type a
friendly name like "lil cousin" or "whipping it".

I've seen it before where you have to enter the current label name. I
imagine this is like that as a precaution, kinda like the way you have to
give three thumbs downs and enter before you reset all your TiVo data. But,
iirc, this is fdisk that does this, not format.com.

I've seen FDISK ask for the volume name, but never FORMAT.

That contradicts what you just posted. :)

I believe if you use FDISK to delete a partition, it will prompt you to
type in the current volume name.

You missed the point. I agree that later versions of FDISK will prompt for
the volume name. But we are discussing whether or not the FORMAT command
ever asks for the volume name as a confirmation before wiping out any data.
What I meant was "I've seen FDISK prompt for the volume name before the
operation, but never FORMAT. I've only seen FORMAT prompt for the new
volume name after the format."

The OP thought he had to type the existing label, I'm saying he can just
type anything as the new label. Hopefully by now he's typed something and
he's not still sitting there at the label prompt!
