Carl,

If the $MFT and related metadata are perfectly defragmented, then you should
have 2 "green" segments.

If the $MFT/metadata are mildly fragmented, you will probably not notice any
slowdown in performance. I suspect possibly a network/master browser issue
for your sluggishness when browsing the network.

Defrag utility, that's where I meant to say I observed
this, not just the general W2K Defrag.

You're right though, but another thing helped as well. I
consolidated tables in boot mode then I logged on as a
diffwerent admin re-ran the defrag and it knocked down the
segments considerably.
