When I run NTBackup on a Windows 2003 server, the backup options include a box to "disable Volume Shadow Copy." But whether I disable it or not, the backup isn't any faster. How do you go about gaging the supposed speed improvements of a VSS backup? It doesn't really seem to make a difference. I'm aware of the Shadow Copies of Shared Folders (SCSF). It's well documented, works well, and it's obviously fast. But what about a regular backup (whether it's to disk or tape) utilizing VSS? I can't believe I'm the only one in the dark about this

Who told you using VSS would make the backup faster?

As far as I know, the only thing it does is make your backup more
CONSISTENT, since it's actually the frozen snapshot that's backed up, not
the active filesystem.
