View Full Version : Cannot Access Server Shares
Preacher Man 10-11-2005, 08:44 PM I am experimenting with the routing feature of Win2K, but I am experiencing
a problem. My routing seems to be working but when I enable the second NIC
in the server my Win98 clients cannot access file shares on the server.
They can ping it, but cannot access the shares.
Any ideas?
Preacher Man 10-11-2005, 09:16 PM I think I have it now. The Win2K server that I was placing on both subnets
was also my PDC, which I learned is a no no.

Preacher Man 10-11-2005, 09:53 PM Well without changing anything, the problem reoccurred after several
minutes. I am guessing that something is updating on the server or client
that is killing the connection. Any ideas?

Right click on Network Places, choose properties, in the Window that opens
click on the Advanced menu, select Advanced settings. Move the internal
interface to the top of the connections pane.
Also make sure NetBIOS over TCP/IP is enabled on the internal NIC.

Preacher Man 10-13-2005, 04:21 PM By "Internal" I assume that you mean my first NIC card? Both NICs are
actually on internal networks. But I checked the settings and NetBIOS over
TCP/IP was enabled on both NICs. And the first NIC was listed on top of the
list. Any other suggestions?

Are both NICs on the same subnet?
If so, they should be teamed. If you don't have teaming software you will
have to disable NetBIOS over TCP/IP on one of the NICs. What happens is when
you have two NICs on the same subnet, facing each other, they will disable
themselves because what each NIC sees is a computer with a conflicting
NetBIOS name.
If not make sure the clients are using the correct subnet for the NIC it is
connected to.

Since you now have two subnets, you need WINS.
