View Full Version : Can't Install Windows XP Using Windows 2000 RIS

I am trying to deploy an OEM version (Dell) of Windows XP SP2 from a Windows
2000 SP4 RIS server without any luck. I am able to deploy Windows 2000
Professional with no problem.

I created the base image of the OEM Windows XP SP2 CD that came with our
Dell Optiplex GX280 on the RIS server through the "Remote Install" tab. I
followed the instructions in both of these Microsoft KB articles, "How to add
a third-party OEM network adapter to a RIS installation" and "Unable to
Create Windows 2000 Server Image on RIS Server". I'm able to push F12 on the
GX280, provide the username and password, and in the list of images I can
install, it does list the base image I created. A couple seconds into the
text based setup, when it looks like its loadin drivers, I get the following
error:

File iastor.sys caused an unexpected error (21) at line 3540 in
d:\xpsprtm\base\boot\setup\setup.c.

My only option is to hit a key to continue and reboot.

Any ideas? I would greatly appreciate your help because I have spent endless
hours researching and trying to resolve this problem without solution.

Thanks,
Mark

I have seen a similar error when using the wrong drivers - Windows XP
drivers in a Windows 2000 setup, or vice versa. Confirm that you have the
correct drivers selected for the mass storage device in the RIS image.

How would I check which drivers are selected for the mass storage device? I
simply added the cd-based image on the RIS server and did not configure
anything in terms of drivers (except for the changes required for the NIC
driver).

Unfortunately I don't do RIS - you might check in the Windows 2000 Setup and
Windows 2000 Setup and Deployment forums for more assistance.

Sometimes I think RIS is like a holy grail or something.

Just when I'm about to give up I find this:

http://support.dell.com/support/topics/global.aspx/support/dsn/en/document?c=ca&cs=CABSDT1&docid=F90F1F98517AE9C1E030030ABD624C71&journalid=9D74AD1F587811DA9DBCF13467E60A2F&l=en&s=bsd#enca

Good luck!
