I have a XP, SP2 workstation that cannot be pinged either by IP or name.
Yet it can ping any node on our network and receives mapped drives thru
group policy logon scripys just fine.It can access the Internet and can
browse tall nodes in My Network Places

If I ping by name, the reply indicates the correct IP address but the ping
fails.

What could cause this?? DNS settings have been checked and are fine.

If you cannot ping from outside, could be the windows firewall not
allowing ping through as well.
