View Full Version : Question marks of colons in path drive designation

After a rearrangement of my harddisks and partitions, when I booted W2k
I found the former C: had become D:, and lots of stuff needed
adjustments in the registry.

During this process I discovered that a large number of registry value
data look like

C?\Program Files\Common Files\System\Mapi\1044\NT\MSPST32.DLL

with a question mark instead of the colon.

I thought at first that this could be the result of some failed
attempts at automating the fixup, but later I also found numerous
entries with D?\Program Files..., and I now think there must be
something else behind this.

Anyone knows what the question mark means?

Just in case you wonder, in the example, the value name is
414000001E872D116BF00006799C897E, and the key is
HKLM\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Installer\UserData\S-1-5-18\Components\E5B140AB53A42D1

Thanks,
Enrique
