How to move icons (items) on desktop to other position that the position will

Normally one can leftclick/drag any icon to another position, and it
will remain there indefinitely. One can also rightclick on a clear spot
on the desktop and click on "Line Up Icons" to get a regularly spaced
icon arrangement; this will "nudge" each icon to center it in the
nearest "box".

The dimensions of the "pixel box" within which each icon exists on the
desktop grid are definable in Display Properties/Appearance. The latter
can be reached via a rightclick on an empty spot on the desktop; select
Properties.

If icons spontaneously rearrange themselves, that's indicative of a
system hardware or software problem, or, occasionally, bad user behavior
like powering down gracelessly. Boo.

Greetings -

You may just have to turn off "Auto Arrange". Right click on the desktop
and you should see "Arrange Icons". Mouseover and you should see "Auto
Arrange" at the bottom. If it is "checked" then Windows tries to re-arrange
the desktop icons whenever anything changes. Un-check it and icons will stay
where you put them.
