Went to a clients site to investigate slow network connections and got the
following. Systems are Win 2000 on Dell C610 and WinXP SP2 on Dell D600.
Local server/gateway is 2000 Server and remote server is 2003. Site A is
local and Site B is server farm about 150 miles from A.
User is a VB developer and probably knows more than i do. here is the
report...
"User has created a batch file that is residing on server farm in Site B,
batch file is set up to record time elapsed from start to finish of
instructions.
the following anomalies have been noted:
1) Win2000 machine will take roughly 2-3 seconds to complete whilst WinXP
machine will take typically 15-18 seconds to complete same task
2) difference remains regardless of hardware / network station
3) problem ocurrs on all WinXP machines
4) problem does not ocurr when batch file is run from outside Site A from
same laptop (i.e. users home ADSL)
5) problem does not ocurr when run locally or indeed when batch file is on
another remote machine in Site B (i.e. desktop), only on the server"
now i have to admit i am somewhat confused by all this bearing in mind that
the problem location is very specific, the user can take his laptop to any
other site and the anomaly does not ocurr which cancels out group policies,
AV, firewalls etc. VPN has no effect because it is not used in Site A or at
another sites (c-z).
so can someone please stop me scratching my head (getting too many
splinters) and throw me a bone or 2 here!!
Thanks in advance
