I am doing this for a friend as he can not get into his computer past windows
signing on. Apparently, he lost his password, doesn't remember what it could
be.
I live next door and don't have windows xp and have little knowledge as
what to do .
He has no book or software.
How can we find his password or at least create a new one?

Press "F8" on start up

Choose Safe Mode

Press "Control+Alt+Del" twice

Type in "Administrator" for username

Leave the password field blank

Click "ok"

By default on factory XP builds, the admin password is left blank. If the
root admin account has been locked or never used you can access it through
safe mode login.
