View Full Version : Problem Printing From A Virtual PC
RLAnderson 09-05-2006, 11:54 PM Hi Folks,
Got a problem that I hope that someone can assist on. I am attempting
to access an existing shared printer on a desktop with a virtual PC
(VPC) hosted on a laptop. I can see, and use, the shared printer from
the host laptop OS, but am not able to "see" it from the guest OS in the
VPC. Here are the details:
- Desktop
-- OS: Win2K Pro SP4 with all updates
- Laptop
-- Host OS: WinXP Pro SP2 with all updates
-- Microsoft Virtual PC 2004 SP1 is installed.
-- Guest OS: Win98SE without updates
Details:
From the host OS on the laptop, I can see, and use, all shared folders
and the shared printer on the desktop. From the laptop guest OS, I can
see and used all the shared folders on the desktop, but the printer
cannot be seen or used. In the desktop, I went into
Printers|Properties|Sharing for the installed printer. In the "Drivers
for different versions of Windows" box, I click on the "Additional
Drivers" button and select "Intel|Windows 95 or 98" and click "OK". I
then get the Windows 95/Windows 98 Printer Drivers window that says "The
file "inf" on Windows 2000 Server CD-ROM is needed" and points to the
"C:\i386\printers\Win9X" folder. I have looked on my Win2K CD and,
obviously, am not able to find the drivers there.
Question:
Can these drivers, for Win2K Server, be downloaded? If they can, where
are they? I went rummaging through the M$ site, but have had no luck
finding them. Maybe I was in the wrong spot. Any assist would be
appreciated.
Rick

Cari \(MS-MVP\) 09-06-2006, 04:39 PM It would help if you told us the make and model of said printer.

OOPs, forgot. HP600C (Monochrome)
Cari \(MS-MVP\) 09-06-2006, 11:43 PM Drivers for Windows XP are included on the XP CD:
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;293378
and drivers for Windows 9x are on the 99x CD or you can download them from:
http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/softwareList?lc=en&cc=us&lang=en&dlc=en&product=59211&os=19
(Yes, I know it says 95 but they'll work)

Hi Cari,
1. First off, thanks for the HP link for the drivers. I needed them for
a Windows For WorkGroups (WFWG) 3.11 Virtual PC(VPC) I was setting up.
The drivers installed, as a local printer, without problems on this WFWG
VPC. I plan on setting up a Win 98SE VPC so these drivers will be
useful there as well, if I need them. Thanks again.
2. I attempted to use these drivers to install printer drivers for Win
9X, by way of the procedure stated in my first post. However, Win2K Pro
does not permit this to happen using (in my case) a driver floppy.
There is something "hard coded" in Win2K Pro in which it demands the
Win2K Server CD. If I am missing something, please feel free to correct me.

Hi Again Cari,
I guess that I should clean my glasses a bit better. I really rummaged
around the MSKB and found a fix for my printer driver installation
problem. Please give the following link a look:
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;260107
It's kind of a goofy workaround, IMO, but the drivers did (finally)
install. I just wished that M$ would make those drivers available for
downloading. One could burn them to a cd and make the process a little
less of a PIA.
I still am not able to "see" my shared printer, on my Win2K box, from my
Win 98 VPC. Now, just have to fix that and I'll be off and rolling.
