We need to install xerox ip printers to remote offices that print
directly to the printer with no reference to any print server.

They are running win xp pro

All on a single w2k/w2k3 domain - they use logon scripts and are
generally connected to the central HQ but we are removing the local
servers in place of wan optimising products which work fine for all but
printing we've found so far.

Will the new functionaility in R2's print management via group policy
allow this or do we need to go with vbs?

The R2 deployed printer GPO functions work to deploy a Windows printer
connection on a Win2k , XP , Server 2003, or Vista client.

rundll32 printui will probably be the solution if you have Win2k clients.
