Does anyone know why when you open the WINS Server MMC snapin on a local
machine that is running WINS it would say that it cannot find the local WINS
Server? This just starting happening to a machine that has been working fine
for over 2 years.

When I open that WINS MMC, the window on the right side of the MMC displays
the "X" icon as says it cannot find the WINS server. The error is: The
network path was not found. However, when I checked the WINS server on the
machine, I found that the WINS service was running and it was able to process
command prompt inputs. I also tried accessing the WINS server on that machine
remotely from the MMC snapin on both a WIN 2000 and a WIN 2003 machine. Both
of these MMC snapins produced the same results. I even tried uninstalling the
WINS server and then re-installing it on that machine, but I got the same
results from the MMC applet.

I am baffled and any help would be greatly appreciated! THANKS in advance!

Hi,
I recently installed a new SBS 2003 server and noticed the same issue. (Not
sure why yours would suddenly starting performing this way.) After reading a
few posts here and searching the MS KB, I came up with MS KB doc 287727
(mError Message "Cannot find the WINS server" occurs when accessing the WINS
database).

Basically you need to set the Remote Registry Service to Automatic and start
it. Once that starts, stop and restart the WINS Service. It should work
after that.

Hope this helps, good luck.

Very odd, but it actually worked. It appears that the remote registry service
is required in order for the WINS MMC snapin to work correctly ... Thanks
very much!
