I recently upgraded my computer from Win98 to Win2K. Afterwards, Win2K
and Win98 were on the same partition. I installed Service Pack 4, then
all other security updates, then IE 6 SP1.
Now I have this problem: Windows keeps telling me that there is one
security update ready to install:
"Security Update for Microsoft Data Access Components (KB832483)"
When I click on the update icon in the task bar and click to install it,
I get the message that the update was installed successfully. However, a
couple of minutes later, the same update message pops up again in the
task bar. Repeating the installation doesn't help - it always keeps
popping up.
Any idea what causes this and how I can get rid of the problem? How do I
know if the update is installed or not?

There is an faq and troubleshooting links if you manually go to
the Microsoft Update website, including information on the
newsgroups for update.

In your case, I would recommend visiting
www.microsoft.com/data
and downloading the latest MDac and manually installing it,
and then visiting the update site again.

I recommend going to http://windowsupdate.microsoft.com to check for
updates. This will usually either install the update and get rid of the
problem, or give you more verbose information as to whether the update
failed to install, and why.

If that fails, I would try manually downloading the patch .EXE file and
running that, for the same reasons as above. You might do that first.

If none of this helps, you can also run the EVENTVWR command [e.g. by
clicking Start, Run] to look for errors in the Windows System or Application
Event Logs, and check out the %windir%\windowsupdate.log file.

This doesn't help.

I only found the 64 Bit version of KB832483 and can't install it. If I
download the 32 Bit version, I get the message that a newer version is
already installed.

Nothing related to my problem here - everything appeared to be fine.

I can find this error message after attempting to install the update:
"WARNING: Failed to evaluate Installed rule, updateId =
{C735DBB1-06B4-49F2-815F-97976B4B86A4}.100, error = 0x80041017"

or, at another time:
"WARNING: Update Service: Failed to update backup store"

How do I go ahead from here?

Windows2000-KB922582-x86-ENU.EXE
fixed the problem (those other links were not correct)

2 min later: "Updates are ready for your computer. Click here to install"

In other words: no error message and I get the message that the update
was installed, but the update reminder pops ups indefinitely and wants
to install it again.

and get the MDAC version checker, what is it seeing ??
The update you are dealing with is very old (approx Jan 04)
Also, the history of your machine stretches back to the pre-MDAC
times when ODBC support was all too often getting cross-versioned.

On the page (above link) you will see a direct link to your problem
child patch, but also notice the link to MDAC 2.8 SP1 which does
supercede your patch (which applied to 2.8 gold).

I would grab 2.8 SP 1 (which does install for W2k and Win98) and
also get the version checker. After installing 2.8 Sp1 then I would
rerun the version checker to make sure it is seeing only 2.8 SP 1

If after that autoupdate is still saying as it does now, then there is
likely a corruption in your wuau catalog. For that you should post
into the update newsgroup.

I got the "CompChecker" and under FileDetails, it displays a whole list

As I originally mentioned, I had Win98 before on the computer and
installed Win2K from the installation CD. Then, I downloaded and
installed SP4 and all updates.

This did the job. I installed MDAC 2.8 SP1, and since then, the computer
doesn't want to install the update anymore. However, the version checker
displays just what I saw before ... unless I looked at the wrong place
in the long list of shown entries.

You have to have it do the check again.
It may be seeing some residual files that are not being removed,
but the 2.8 sp1 install should have made the active versions on
the components consistent and current.
