Windows 2000 Professional.

Worked one day but seemed to be slow booting up/down for a few days before
wouldn't boot up.

It gets as far as the display that it is processing network settings and
then stalls.

I tried boot from ER disk, most of the choices on the safe mode screen.
Changing Bios to disbale the integrated NIC. Booting with and without the
Comcast cable modem plugged in. Etc etc. Nothing worked.

Called Dell and they had me boot from the XP Resource CD that they sent me
with the PC. Since recieving the PC I called them 3 times asking them to send
me the Win2000Pro cd because that is what was installed on the PC by them at
facotry. But they just keep sending me another XP CD each time I call.

They walked me thry doing a Chkdsk /f /p from recovery console. It said it
found errors but didn't tell me what/where or if it fixed them. Still didn't
boot up so Dell rep told me to let it just sit for at least 24 hours at the
point where it stalls. I did and then shut it down Still wouldn't boot so I
let it sit for few days off.

Booted it and it booted up. But I didn't have the network when it did this
surpirse boot up. I removed Sygate Personal (free version) firewall and
Spysweeper because Dell said these were the problem. My Mcaffe that starts at
boot up said it found NTsystem.exe and that it had deleted it. I looked all
over for any signs of virus entries anywhere including the Registry. I ran
adware, spybot search & destroy, Mcafee. looked high and low for anykind of
virus activity. Found nothing. Tried to restart since I had removed software
that requested that I restart the PC. And now it wont boot up again.

Co-worker said that he had a smiliar problem and that I should fix the file
permissons on my profiles. He said his PC had somehow lost file permissions.
I went into Recovery Console and it prompts me for admin password and excepts
it when I enter it so that profile must be at least partially working. But in
command promt I cant change to any of the directories I have tried to change
to. I want to CHDIR over to Documents and Settings to look at and fix
security settings on my profiles. I get message Access Denied.

What can I do to see and fix file security?
