Am running XP with SP2 & fully updated.
Have AVG (fully updated) & scanned all drives - clear
Have Windows Defender fully updated & scanned all drives - Clear
Have run Spybot & Adaware & cleaned out anything suspicious.

I use MS Office 2003 - all programs load soo slowly (Win 98 & office 2000
immediate on dual boot)

XP hangs & shows svchost (yes it is spelt correctly!) using all resources
for a long time - I think this is Windows update. If I disable updates then
things are as normal (slow) but work.

Should Windows Update virtually stall a computer in its tracks?

What is slow? Booting, running the system or all?

Try Ctrl+Alt+Delete to select Task
Manager and click the Performance Tab. Under Commit
Charge what is the Total, the Limit and the Peak?

How large is the partition in which Windows XP is located
and how much free space?


To increase you free space select Start, All Programs,
Accessories, System Tools, Disk CleanUp, More Options, System Restore and
remove all but the latest System Restore points? Restore points can be quite
large.

You should use Disk CleanUp regularly to Empty your Recycle Bin and
Remove Temporary Internet Files. Whenever you remove redundant files you
should always run Disk Defragmenter by selecting Start, All Programs,
Accessories, System Tools, Disk Defragmenter.

I would pay special attention at the size of the XP partition and the
available free space.

Take a look at the virtual memory settings. If you have predetermined values
setup, make a note of them and select the "System Managed Size" option, then
click the SET button and the OK. If you don't click SET your changes will not
take place.
Reboot the computer for the changes to take effect.

Hi

Thanks for the idea, have adjusted the virtual memory as you suggest &
rebooted. It might be a bit of wishful thinking but it might be a bit
faster, but a lot slower than Office 2000 running on Win 98!

The operating system drive is filling up, & you might see another query
about imaging partitions over to a bigger hard disc & getting the multiboot
to work!

I, and a number of co-workers as well as associates in other companies have
all simultaneously arrived at the conclusion that some of the XP service
pack updates are responsible for many PC's slowing down at nearly the same
time. There was a period in late September, early October where many
computers slowed down remarkedly when installing MS updates to XP.
