Hi all -
I have a more general question regarding network topology... that may
not necessarily be limited to Windows 2000 Server. Although I have
limited experience in deploying servers with varying role
characteristics, I am unsure of how they rank in terms of hardware
requirements.
For example, I know that a domain controller role is more hardware
intensive then that of a member server... all else equivalent. But,
what about comparing an HTTP server vs. name server vs. Exchange
server, etc?
I plan on isolating roles for each server... I.e.: I will run email
server separate from HTTP server, and public name server separate from
domain controller. With that in mind, how would one go about ranking
hardware requirements (from most intensive to least) for various server
roles? I realize that in some regards this may be viewed as an unfair
question. For example... this could rely heavily on content type on
HTTP server. But, in general, what is to be expected?
Here are some server roles that I have in mind:
DC, IIS, ISA, NS, MX, file server, etc...
I'd greatly appreciate some thoughts on this.
Thanks!
