I got this error message when I tried to remote desktop to the Windows 2000
server from a Windows XP. It says "the client could not establish a
connection to the remote computer. The most likely causes for this error
are:
1. Remote connections might not be enabled at the remote computer
2. The maximum number of connections was exceeded at the remote computer
3. A network error occurred while establishing the connection

I have tried to remove the Terminal Services through Add/Remove Windows
Components and reinstall it through Add/Remove Windows Components and still
got the same error message. Do you have any suggestions?

If you have firewall on your server, check if the port TCP-3389, I've
read somewhere that UDP-3389 is being used by Terminal Services, but I
doubt.
check whether you can ping the IP address of server. put them on a single
network segment with the same IP range and see what happens...
Moreover, you can try to connect to the server from itself. Install Remote
desktop client on the server and try to connect 127.0.0.1, you should be
able to login, if it was successful, it means you should be able to find the
problem somewhere in the network connectivity :-)

When I go to Services and right-click on Terminal Services, the "Start",
"Stop", "Pause", etc. are greyed out. Can you think of any reasons? I have
uninstalled and reinstalled the Terminal Services component. Thanks.

Diane,
Terminal services can not be stopped or started like other services.
It's always running when you install it, what you can do is just Disable or
Enable RDP Listener, in order to do that, you should use "Terminal Services
Configuration" tool and browse the configuration tree and find Connections,
in that folder you will find RDP-Tcp.... you can Disable/Enable it :-)
