View Full Version : loss of network connectivity after mapping drive

Hi All,

Firstly, I am a programmer not a sys admin or network admin. So while I have
experience building and maintaining servers and small networks, I am far
from an expert.

My problem: At home I have a Windows 2000 AS running as a domain controller
which is multihomed and is running routing and remote access. One interface
runs my ADSL modem/router and the other an internal network. I run 2 virtual
machines under Vmware which are Linux Debian and Windows 2000 server.
Everything works just fine except for the problem I am now experiencing.
When I map a drive from my DC to the Win2k vm, I periodically lose network
connectivity to the win2k vm. I run a ping -t and for 30 or 40 packets it's
fine, then stops pinging for 10 or 20 packets and this continues while a
drive is mapped. If I disconnect the mapped drive, the problem goes away.

The same does not occur in opposite. If I map a drive from the Win2k vm to
the DC, the problem does not occur. Got me stumped! I did just install a few
win2k updates on the dc (which I didn't on the vm). I haven't found anyone
else recently reporting this problem after scouring google and news groups
so while I haven't ruled them out, I haven't ruled them in either!

Any help would be much appreciated.

Thanks,

Steph.
