I recently picked up a trashed Win2000 box. I wanna see if I can salvage
it. the problem is that I don't know the password for the user account on
it. is there any way to reset or remove the password?

Use "Active Password Changer" program of Active Data Recovery Software.
by using this program you can build bootable floppy and boot the machine by
it and then see all user accounts of windows and can change or reset password.

There's a list of free Windows password reset disks, the first one works
quite well:

Simply renaming the SAM file in %windir%\system32\config\ will reset the
admin password to blank.

However, there is some advantage to reinstalling Windows freshly. Getting
an install CD might be a problem.
