Is this EFS encrypted? What is the machine environment?
i.e. XP, Windows 2000 ? in a domain or not ?

decrypting, I changed from domain to workgroup.

Your most direct solution would probably be to rejoin the domain and
log in with the domain account used originally to save the files encrypted,
then decrypt them.
After that you would be safe to again disjoin from domain.
Alternatively you could log into the domain with the account that saved the
files and then export that accounts EFS cert/key to external media, and
then import these into the account you use in the disjoined machine.
