View Full Version : Spell check in OE?

I know with MS Office OE will use the spell check in Word but should it not
be the same with MS Works 8?
I have a PC here with Works 8 and Tools/Spelling in OE is greyed out.

No, Works spell checker won't work. You need Microsoft Office or an Office
component. Works *Suite* will work, since it includes Word.

There are also several downloadable freeware/shareware alternative spell
checkers that work with Outlook Express and Outlook. Since I have no
personal experience with any of these, I'll let someone else recommend one.

This freeware spellchecker will integrate into OE
http://www.geocities.com/vampirefo/
The answer to your question is No. There is no reason why Microsoft should
make the spellchecker that comes with it's less expensive Microsoft Works
application integrate with OE ;-)

Thanks for the replies, will look at some of the freeware spellcheckers but
didn't older versions of Works integrate the spell checker into OE?

Works never integrated it's spellchecker into OE. Microsoft Word's
spellchecker does integrate though.

I remember someone also using a cheap greeting card program for the spell
check.

Hi Kenny - The following free Spell Check is reported to work well with OE6:

http://www.majorgeeks.com/article.php?sid=2952&cat=10A free program, made to
allow people to use Spell Checker in Outlook Express. This is a stand alone
application, that incorporates in Outlook Express. The purpose of this
program, is to supply for free the ability to use Spelling in OE, without
the need to purchase other software, such as MS Word,Works, or Office.

This one appears to work fine also:
http://www.g4techtv.com/callforhelp/features/42762/Free_File_Spell_Checker_for_OE.html

If you search on Google a bit, you'll find other free ones as well.

Tried to install Spell Checker for OE 2.1 from:
http://www.majorgeeks.com/article.php?sid=2952&cat=10A
got the message that some files were write protected and asking if I wanted
to overwrite them anyway.
Not sure what to do here, if I say no installation aborts.

Hi Kenny - Well, not sure what that's about without more info. You might
want to try the other one and see if that one goes OK. It appears to still
be available.

Thanks Jim for the reply but those two links are for the same program.
Can't give more info because that's all the message says.

Do you have OE running while trying to install the spell checker? If so shut
down OE first. I have installed this freebie spellchecker many times and
have never seen the message you are referring to.
