View Full Version : Weird Start All Programs problem

When I press Start, All Programs often there's a wait of exactly 15 seconds
(timed it with a stopwatch) before the program list appears. Once it's
appeared, it remains available instantly for a while, don't know how long,
then after a longer while, I have to wait exactly 15 seconds again for the
list. I've tried sorting it by name to see if that would help, but it
didn't. Any ideas would be welcome - it's a real pita.

Networked XP Pro SP2 all patched up to date.

If the list is very long or contains lots of icons then it is normal. Group
them in subfolders,

Hi Ayush

Many thanks for your input. How do you know that it's normal? Is the
behaviour documented in the MS site or some other place?

Jay

He just knows these things , see?
It remains quick for a while because the info stays in memory.
After a while you probably need to use that little bit of memory so it
"unloads" the info. Then you go to start/all programs & it has to go find
the info all over again.
& No I dunno if i's normal either & Microsoft didn't tell me either!!
Watch the light (HD access) & you'll see for yourself!!

I've cracked it. One of the shortcuts in All Users pointed to a server that
was retired some time ago. Changed the shortcut to point to a valid
location, and the problem's gone away. Wish I could retire.

Hope this helps somebody.

Actually, it did help me, at least. I thought that timer was 20 seconds,
but apparently not always. It's usually a matter of looking for something
that doesn't exist when you get repeatable pauses of (now 15, and) 20
seconds <g>.

How very gratifying to have been useful to somebody!
