View Full Version : Fax service cannot start

I am trying to use Fax service in XP but the odds are against me.
This is what I get:

1. In Control Panel/Add or Remove Programs/Add Remove Windows
Components I tick the Fax Services and click Next ... everything seems
to go OK but when I recheck there in no tick in the Fax Services (that
I ticked)

2. When looking in Admin Tool/Services all the options
Start/Stop/Pause/Resume for the Fax services is grayed out and Startup
Type is Disabled. When trying to change it to Manual it says:

The specified service has been marked for deletion

When clicking on the tab Dependencies it gives the message:

Interface: Class not registered

Appreciate if someone can give me guideline to resolve this problem ...
or do I have to buy me a fax machine ...

Is your analog fax modem on the HCL list and employing the latest drivers?
What happens during the installation routine? What is the original data
source for your OS installation files?

I moved the modem (Zyxel U-90E) to another XP computer (#2) where it
worked OK (installation & configuratin of Fax Services passed smoothly)
.... so it has to be something wrong with computer #1 (problems which I
described) that I can't figure out ...
Both computers were installed from genuine Windows CD:s and the modem
driver is the latest ...

No idea then. There are no clues here. I assume the fax installation routine
directed you to the same Windows CD from which you installed the OS?

Start here:

http://members.shaw.ca/bsanders/FAQFAX.htm#_Toc88835132
2. Why can't the XP Fax Installation Program find the Installation Files?

In this case, it sounds you may have security data base corruption as
documented here:

http://support.microsoft.com/kb/884018/EN-US/
You cannot add a Windows component in Windows XP

You can either:

1. Get the hotfix mentioned in the KB article and install it. Microsoft
usually waives any charges for support calls to get supported hotfixes
listed in Knowledge Base articles.

2. Try this procedure using the Esentutl.exe utility mentioned in the KB
article to recover from security database corruption:

http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/genericDocument?lc=en&cc=us&docname=c00270202
HP and Compaq Notebook PCs: Unable to Install Windows XP Fax Software

Note that Microsoft does NOT recommend that you use the Esentutl.exe utility
and would prefer you try the hotfix.

Hello Russ and Hall,

Thanks for your professional advices.

My fax problem is still ... status quo

1. There are no compressed files in the subdirectory.
The files are fxsapi.dll and fxcfgwz.dll in C:\WINDOWS\system32\

2. I issued:

esentutl /p %windir%\security\database\secedit.sdb

and then shutdown/restarted XP. Nothing changed in the positive
way.

At this moment I am totally lost ... should I concider to buy a fax
machine ... or will my problem be solved in SP3

/zkab

I doubt there will be any solutions forthcoming for Windows XP Fax. Nor do
we even know what your problem is yet from your descriptions. Have you
applied any SP's on this system since you first installed the Fax Service?
What is the answer to my question about the source files to which you are
directed?

Windows XP was installed from a CD from MS.
When I first tried to install Fax Service (Control Panel/Add or Remove
Programs/Add Remove Windows Components) I was asked to insert the
Windows CD ... which I did. As far as I understood then everything went
OK (copying files and no error msgs) but still all the options
Start/Stop/Pause/Resume for the Fax services were grayed ...

All the SP's was done before installing the Fax Service.

Does this answer your questions or have I missed something ...

Then why don't you try what Hal suggested by getting the hotfix?
