moving old win2k install to new hw. sata raid embedded on mb
install needs "f6" to supply raid inf on floppy.

is there any way to avoid a: drive? is floppy still unevitable part of hw
inventory?

by the way, what is the real nature of raid "f6" setup, assumnig that raid
is embedded into mb, and should be totaly transparent to os [raid is raid_1
and is just mirrored disks]

You need a floppy drive, or you can create a slipstreamed win2k installation
containing the raid drivers.

Raid controller may be embedded in the mobo but the driver isnt, and the o/s
does not have a built in driver, therefore if you attempt to install,
without using F6, the installation will not see the controler/hd's, and will
abort.

well, there was a funny problem.

mobo [with integrated raid] is asus p5nd2-se, with sata drives.
there is no special [separated] raid disk connector, but simply, on mobo
bios setup you check that raid is enabled, and in raid bios setup you decide
which sata connectors bellongs to raid [very simple setup].

we prepared floppy with win2000 raid drivers [for "f6"], but it appeared
that bare win2000 is not able to recognize drives.
we needed install cd with previously integrated win2000 & sp4

is this normal behaviour [not to be able to install core/basic win2000 on
this raid]?
or, are we missing something on "f6"?

on mobo/raid manual, there is no limitation, just marked "for win2000"

at this point now, it is solved [with integrated install pack] but is little
bit strange.
any comments?

I think your problem was not that you didn't have the right drivers, but
that your drives are probably too big for the earlier version of Win2K to
support. I think you would need at least SP3 to get that support. An
alternate fix would have been to install to a smaller drive.

I've had this happen alot to me, you have to remember that mobo's with
SATA/RAID onboard [sometimes gigabit LAN too] are now 'standard' whereas
the OS is 6 or 7 yrs old. Whats worse here is that floppies only last a
day or two owing to humidity/electromagnetism regardless of where you
store them, making the F6 floppy-only step tricky :-)

Floppies only last a day or two (if that) due to lack of quality
control.

i had a bunch of 5 1/4" floppies [and original drive also] stored [or
forgotten]? at the basement for more than ten years, from old pc/xt, with
old dos games.
recently, just for fun, i wanted to show these games to kidds, found
computer capable to mount old 5 1/4" floppy drive, and succeeded to read in
all of these old floppies!

you know, 5 1/4" floppy is almost without protection, just in flexible thin
envelope, even with exposed head access area.

i was realy surprised, knowing that sometimes, in the office it happened to
have saved backup onto the floppy afternoon, leave it on the desk, and
tomorrow to find it unreadable.
