View Full Version : OFFICE 2007 EXCELL SERVICES
Jeff Moore 05-24-2006, 10:14 PM Alvin:
Can you please give a brief overview of how Office 2007 and Excell services
fits in with those users currently using the OWC 11 controls. Is there an OWC
12? Now that the Beta is available a little insight would be greatly
appreciated.
Thanks

Where is this available? I've been trying to get my hands on this for a
couple months now and they wouldn't even let me have it. I was told that
beta and pre-betas are only available to Office MVP's (I'm not an Office
MVP) so my guess is as good as yours where that is concerned. However, as
soon as I get my hands on the beta, I intend to hammer it.

Jeff Moore 05-25-2006, 07:34 PM For once I know something!!
http://www.microsoft.com/office/preview/beta/download/en/default.mspx
There is more info on Sharepoint 2007 and how excell services comes into
play on the Office site. As you know there are many issues with the OWC 11. I
am very curios as to wether the 2007 versions solve many of these. IE7 Beta 2
is pretty cool also. I highly recommend it.
Best Regards

Yup, i've been on the beta for a couple months now. It's been very good
though it pales in features compared to firefox.
There doesn't seem to be a standalone OWC in there. I have to do some more
digging around into share point to see what's up.

From what I gather, the OWC as we know it today has morphed into a set of
services that exposes the same functionality in an SOA-type architecture.
The front-end, spreadsheet, chart etc, sit inside web-parts that provide
full interactivity. The back end is powered by the Excel services. It
provides robust, scalable access to Excel's calculation engine and charting
infrastructure.
In a nutshell, the functionality that we have grown accustom to is still
there, but the way in which it is exposed is markedly different in a way
that would allow applications to scale correctly especially high user
applications. I'm trying to fire up some working examples but I don't have
it working just yet.

Jeff Moore 05-26-2006, 06:57 PM Alvin:
Thank you for the response. In your testing will you be testing in
Sharepoint 2007? This is another area of question as in the past Sharepoint
services was included at no cost with Windows 2003 server. There is mention
of Sharepoint Services 2007 on the Microsoft pages but not a seperate
download. We are currently using Sharepoint Services, BI Portal and OWC 11 in
straight HTML and in Webparts. The problem with the webpart environment for
me is the difficulty to add the VBSCRIPT to fix some of the problems with the
OWC11 such as Drilldown Series coloration retention, Series color assignment,
etc.
I just wanted to suggest that your sample testing reflect a likely
deployment such as what we are currently doing as described above.
Thanks Again
