View Full Version : 98 machines can not authenticate

Joshua
Greetings,

I'm pretty stumped on this one and can not find the right
answer. Hopefully someone can help me with this.

Background: Native 2000 domain, 3 DCs, 1 DHCP, 2 WINS, 2
DNS

Recently one of my DCs failed (which was my DHCP server).
I'm not sure if this is related, but since (this was
Friday) my 98 machines can NOT authenticate with the
domain. When I attempt to logon it gives me the following
error: The domain password you supplied is not correct, or
access to your logon server has been denied.

Now, I've started auditing all logon attempts. If I try to
logon to an account that has been disabled, the DCs log
that. However, they do not pickup attempts with a valid
account.

The 98 machines are in the same subnet as the DCs. I've
tested connectivity and I've also tested all settings
deployed through DHCP. I was having wins issues earlier
(p/p relationship issues) but those have since been
resolved and wins is working properly and reporting no
errors in my logs.

Possibly an Lmhosts issue which I read about in the KB but
beyond that I'm pretty stumped. Ideas?

Thank you,
Joshua

Joshua,

A couple of things possibly:

1) was the DC that failed holding any of the five FSMO Roles, particularly
the role of PDC Emulator? If so, was that issue resolved?
2) have you installed the DSClient update on the WIN98 systems? Take a look
at the following MSKB Articles:

http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;249841&Product=win2000
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;EN-US;323466

3) have you resolved the DHCP Server situation? BTW - are you using the
Options ( 003, 006, 015, 044, 046 ) to give your DHCP Clients additional
information?

HTH,

Cary

Greetings Cary,

1 - Yeah, it was holding the roll of PDC emulator. It is
back up, and the fsmo roll is running. Any way to confirm
its running properly?

2 - I'm in the process of trying that now.

3 - DHCP server is up and running fine. All of those
options are configured and double checked to be configured
properly.

Thanks,
Joshua
