View Full Version : OE 6 - I can't delete any more.

=?Utf-8?B?YWxzaWU=?=
I have an attached file in my outbox (.bmp attached file) which I can't send,
or delete, without OE dying (Not responding). I also can't delete or move any
other messages now.
I can receive mail via , but not send
anything without the program hanging up and eventually dying. I have all
updates I'm aware of.
It seemed to start with this one file. I can't determine its size through
properties. If I remove the preview pane I can highlight it, but still not
remove it.

Any hints?

If there is any mail in your Outbox you want to save or send other than
the large one, move the messages to another folder. Drafts perhaps.
Then:

Tools>Options>Maintenance>Store folder will reveal the location
of your Outlook Express files. Press the Tab key to highlight the folder
location, then Ctrl+C. Close OE, then Start>Run>Ctrl+V will put the
location in the box - Click OK and you'll see the OE files. Otherwise,
write the location down and navigate to it in Windows Explorer.

In WindowsXP & 2K, the OE user files (DBX and WAB) are by default
marked as hidden. To view these files in Explorer, you must enable
Show Hidden Files and Folders under Start>Control Panel>Folder
Options>View.

With OE closed, find the DBX file for the folder in
question {Outbox.dbx} and delete it. A new one will be created
automatically when you open OE.

Do not archive mail in default OE folders. They will eventually
become corrupted. Create your own user defined folders for storing
mail and move your mail to them. Empty Deleted Items folder regularly.
Keep user created folders under 100MB, and Default folders as empty as
is feasible.

After you are done, follow up by compacting your folders manually
while working *offline* and do it often.

Click on Outlook Express at the top of the folder tree so no folders are
open. Then: File>Work Offline (or double click Working Online in the
Status Bar).
File>Folder>Compact all folders. Don't touch anything until the
compacting is completed.

In Tools>Options>Maintenance: Uncheck Compact messages in background
and leave it unchecked. {N/A if running XP/SP2}.

Bruce,
The deletions did it.

By the way, being the good "do-bee" that I am (the phrase is probably before
your time) I always clear my deleted files, compact off-line, and never,
ever, store emails (archive) in default folders -- not even my inbox.

Thanks for your help. One more item on my 'how-to-do" list. It is growing!

You're welcome. Glad it's fixed. Everything after the first paragraph is a
*canned* reply. That's why all the extra info was there. You'd be surprised
how many times we see, "I had 5 years in mail in my Inbox and it
disappeared". So I always add that as a general warning.
