I imagine this has been asked and answered elsewhere on
this group, but I'm darned if I can find it...
I am attempting to set up a home network between my Dell
desktop running Win 2000 Pro and my IBM laptop with Win
98. I have DSL internet access with a D-Link wireless
router as the hub. The laptop has the matching D-Link
wireless AP card - the desktop is connected to the router
by cable through the Ethernet card.
My problem is that I cannot get either computer to
recognize the other via My Network Places / Network
Neighborhood.
I can access the internet from either computer.
I can ping the router and the Win98 laptop from the Win 2K
desktop, but can only get the router to respond from the
Win98 laptop.
I have put the laptop User ID / Password on the desktop.
I have set up the same Workgroup name on each.
I have TCP/IP on each.
I have tried both automatic assignment of IP and static IP.
I have enabled File and Print sharing on each.
Could this be a firewall problem, and if so, is it at the
level of the router, or at my desktop? If it is, why can
I ping the laptop from the desktop, but not "see" the
laptop through My Network Places when I open the Workgroup?
Ultimately, I am hoping to share the printer and CD burner
attached to the desktop.
Any suggestions are most appreciated.
Thanks!
