netgear RP114 ROUTER / 2k sp4 / GRE / VPN PROBLEM

Hi,

I have a pptp vpn connection that has been working for 2 years. When
upgrading windows 2000 clinets to sp4 (and xp sp1) and server to sp4, I can
only connect 10% of the time.

Apparently the netgear router RP114 may not support GRE pass through (not
confirmed). If this is the case:

1. why would it work 10% of the time ? (ie if gre is confirmed by another
pptp connection within router ?)
2. why has it been working pre SP4 (i.e for 2 years) ?
3. what has sp4 changed ?

Thanks
Scott.

HI Scott,

You might want to be sure you are at SP4. Here is some more info:

271731 PPTP clients cannot connect to a PPTP server that has multiple IP

Thanks,
Gary

Hi,

When getting error 721 during a pptp connection i used MS KB article 271731
"pptp clients cannot connect to a pptp server that has multiple IP
addresses" to fix it.

This article suggests amending the registry key:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Class\\{4D36E972-E325-11
CE-BFC1-08002bE10318}\<000x>

When following this path it only displays EIGHT on the TEN "wan miniport
(PPTP)(VPN-4-#)" (i.e 0-9) adapters that Routing and Remote access displays.

Im 100% sure im looking at the correct path (checked lots of times).

Any idea why only EIGHT are displayed ?

I had another NIC which was removed several weeks ago after discovering this
problem (and after going to SP4).

Thanks
Scott.

Hi Scott,

Thanks for the additional info. There should be 10 wan miniports. Because you removed a
NIC awhile back, I would check for ghosted NICs installed.

As for the connectivity interruptions, this could be a result of the router/switch. We have seen
EMI cause this issue. So check the environment and also try another switch or router to see if
the issue still exists. Or maybe make a few connections internally and see if they have the
same problem. That would isolate the router but not the switch or EMI.

Thanks.
Gary
