View Full Version : Active Directory deployment

Gerry
I,m a newby in active directory and I have to implement
it .
I'm not sure about the procedure that I have to follow.
Actually I have an NT Network,I would like to know if it's
possible to run an NT PDC and a win2k server active
directory with an another domain anme at the same time on
the same lan.I want to install a new domain with active
directory on a brand new server, recreate my user
accounts, move the data from the PDC to active directory
server then when all is good I will add the machines to
the new Active directory domain.

Thanks for your help.

Henrico
The company I used to work for did just that. Set up a
brand new W2K domain with a different name, and using W2K
DNS. Made sure everything was functioning properly in
the new W2K domain, then migrated objects from the old
NT4 domain. We used a tool from Quest Software called
Fastlane Migrator. Very good tool and good tech support
when you needed it.

Hello Gerry, You can't run the NT4.0 PDC with Windows2000 Servers as BDCs,
You can Upgrade the current NT4.0 PDC and run a mixed mode of NT4.0 BDCs,
but the PDC Emulator role bust be at least a Windows2000 Domain Controller.

If you not want to run a mix of NT4.0 BDC and Windows2000 Domain
Controllers, and as you write you will re-create your user account in a new
fresh AD Domain,
Of course you going to re-structure the domain with OUs and design a new
logical structure,

But you are possible to migrate over users accounts, groups, computer as
well service account from the old NT4.0 domain to the new Windows2000
Domain. When Windows2000 runs I Native mode we can take advantage of the
SidHistory attribute with actually allows the end users to access both
domains during the migration process if you want to take it step-by-step.
You can then demote the old NT4.0 domain when you feel that you have a good
structure on your new AD domain and are reedy to take it in use.

I hope this help you abit to see what ways to and steps you can take to make
your upgrade / migration fit your organizations needs.

Hi Christoffer,
I don't want to run my win2k server as BDC,I just want to
have my NT PDC + the new Win2k server running on the same
lan for a while .Just to finish to recreate my users
profile, groups,OUs,..., move the data to the new server
then I will remove the NT PDC.And just run my new win2k
server as the first DC.

Thanks.I will go through the links you gave me.

That would not be a problem unless you not have same NetBIOS name for the NT
domain as the new AD 2000 Domain.

Just one small point. You said that "when all is good I will add the
machines to the new Active directory domain." You do mean the clients,
don't you and NOT the old PDC/BDCs?

Ah, and did anyone mention lots of backups as you go?

Cheers,

Cliff

I think that Don Brash is a Labour mole.
That would explain everything.

Hi Cliff,

I will only add then clients, not the PDC.I will keep the
BDC for a while and I will replace it with an another AD
Domain controller.
