View Full Version : Member Server windows 2003 The DHCP Client service terminated with the following error: Access is denied.
I have a brand new server Dell Poweredge 2650 with two broadcom 10/100/gig cards in it. I get zero errors when I install windows and perform all the updates. However after joining my domain and rebooting I immediately start getting two errors The DC and This box are both attached to a Cisco 4006 switch which has porrtfast turned on for the ports which attach to servers or workstations.
The DHCP Client service terminated with the following error: Access is denied. Event ID: 7023 Source is service control manager
The Background Intelligent Transfer Service service hung on starting. Event ID: 7022 Source is service control manager
I also get this warning prior to the above events: The DHCP Client service is shutting down. The following error occurred : Access is denied. Event ID: 1004 Source DHCP.
IF anyone has any clues on why this is happing I would greatly appreciate a push in the correct direction

This is server 2003 with all current patches. One other piece of information is that it has Teaming is turned on with both of the broadcom nics working together to do load balancing and fail over. Anyone experince issues with this config interacting with a 2003 network using Cisco equipment?

Narayana Mahankali [MSFT] Hi Rick,
The Background Intelligent Transfer Service (BITS) on Windows Server 2003 depends on the EventSystem service; which may not be started before the BITS service is started due to a race condition.
To fix this problem add the EventSystem to the list of dependencies for the BITS service. This can be done using sc.exe as follows:
Log onto the system as an administrator and start a cmd.exe window. To view the dependencies for the BITS service run:
sc qc bits
which will display the service settings for BITS; one of the settings is the list of dependencies. On Windows Server 2003, the only service depedency by default is RpcSs.
To add the EventSystem to the dependencies list for BITS, run the following command:
sc config bits depend= rpcss/eventsystem
This issue will be fixed in Windows Server 2003/SP1.

Great work that eliminated my BITS error. Any clue if the DHCP error is the same issue. Does DHCP have a dependency that is not listed? I want to have an error free boot before I load SQL and move our production database to this box.
Thanks for the help Rick

Should have specified that this box has a static IP. I am guessing that either there is a service dependency which is not getting started or its a permission issue with the Server registering with the DNS server on our DC. Again these adapters a teamed and use a virtual adapter to represent the pair. Could it be possible that because the team has not initialized DHCP fails?

Hi Rick-
Another thing would be to ensure that you have Authorized your DHCP server in Active Directory. That may be what is causing your DHCP errors.

We have authorized the DHCP server. It is currently working fine with our 100 Plus PC's. This issue only comes up on member servers after joining the domain. Its almost like the NT AUTHORITY\NetworkService password is out of sink and this is what is causing the issues. One other suggestion I have seen is to add the computer to the DNS Proxy Update group. Which again is a permissions issue.
I am going to try this next and see if it fixes the issue. It may be that this server grabbed an ip address from the dhcp server when I first installed server 2003. If so maybe the DHCP server owns the record and this is causing an issue with the 2003 member server updating the DNS server with its new static IP address. I tried deleting the DNS/dhcp/wins entries for the server but am guessing that the has to be a record hiding some place
