View Full Version : active directory users and computers default actions
Out of the box, starting active directory users and computers and double clicking on a user's name does not open the user's property window but it does do so on one site that I administer. How do I make this happen on my own site?

Gary,
I am not sure that I follow what you are saying. Are you saying that without any 'intervention' when you open up the Active Directory Users and Computers MMC if you go to a user account object and double-click on it nothing happens ( meaning it does not open up )? What happens if you right click the individual user account object and select 'Properties'?
Further, are you stating that this is 'out-of-the-box' behavior?
I would suggest that there is something going on with your environment as 'out-of-the-box' behavior is that when you double-click on a user account object it pops open. Same thing if you right click and select 'properties'.
So, let's look at your environment. Are you sitting at the DC itself when doing this? At what SP level are your DCs? How many DCs do you have? Does this happen on all DCs? Do you have your DCs in Terminal Services - Remote Administration mode? If yes, what happens when you try via this method? Do you have the ADMINPAK installed on any WIN2000 Pro systems? Are you trying via this method? What user account are you using? What happens if you try to open up another MMC, such as ADS, DNS, DHCP, etc.?
This is a starting point.
HTH,
Cary

Me thinks it's a DNS issue... If he's using some other DNS other than the internal one, then that would cause this. I would start by making sure only the internal DNS server is listed in IP properties (remove the ISP's DNS in IP properties, if it exists).

Confused but subject closed 1. On a machine with both exchange server and AD ( 2000 Server + exchange Server or SBSS 2000, "Active Directory Users and Computers" appears by default in 2 start menu locations - as an entry under "administrative tools" and as an entry under "Microsoft Exchange". These 2 appear to be the same but behave diffferently." Under "administrative tools" double clicking on a user name has no effect but under "Microsoft exchange" it opens the properties page. 2. Running MMC and adding "active Directory users and Computers" Snap in does work with double click but doesn't include the exchange tabs.
This tried on our server and on a test server running SBS2000.
Thanks for your responses

Before you close the subject, just want to point out, the one that installs with Exchange is the one that you would need to use since it has the extra extensions for the Exchange user settings. The default (under Admint Tools) must have got corrupted. When you add the ADUC thru an MMC, it will add the default one.
The proper way to add the one you need to adminster users' Exchange settings is done by running the Exchange setup off the Exchange CDROM and choosing *just* the admin tools. This can be run on a client workstation as well.
The other way to run it is to extract all the DLLs associated with the Exchange ADUC, but that's a PITA to do.
