View Full Version : windows 2000 firewall

devon
I was wondering if anyone knows if windows 2000 comes with
a firewall and if so how can i enable it?

Steven Umbach
Windows 2000 does not come with a built in firewall like XP does. Some refer to
it's capabilities of ipsec to create a firewall via packet filtering, but it is
not the best solution for protecting a computer from the internet. There are
free firewalls available for personal use. Zone Alarm is adequate for novice
users while Sygate and Kerio offer more advanced features for those with some
knowledge of tcp/ip. --- Steve

I don't use these, but have seen them recommended:

Outpost

Outpost Firewall Guide

Sygate

Kerio

I use Outpost free and an implementation of IPSec running also just in case
the software firewall should crash.
IPSec does not watch applications like a software firewall but is good as a
second layer of defence. You can find some more links, information and even
a download file at www.analogx.com which should be a good starting point for
IPSec. Be aware that this file is set for a server so you would need to
select and deselect the rules to suit your situation.
IMO it is well worth the time and effort. I have "stealth" on all
checked ports even wothout a firewall.
