View Full Version : Folder Rights

I want to set up the permissions on a windows 2000 server
so that users can create, modify, save files but can't
create or delete folders. The advanced security option
for the folder says "Create Folders / Append Data" and I
uncheck the box. This disables the creation of folders,
but now I can't modify files. Can someone point me in the
right direction please?

Try giving that group read/list /execute permissions on the main security page.
Then go into the advance permissions and select add, add the group, select files
only in the apply onto box, and check everything that is needed to be equivalent
to modify which I believe is everything except full, change permissions, and
take ownership. --- Steve

Thanks for the help Steve, but that still didn't work.
Anyone have any other ideas? I MUST get this done, and I
am quickly losing hair!

OK. It looks like I made a mistake. Try giving them read/list/execute/write
on the main security page and see if that works. Write access will not allow
them to delete folders. --- Steve

Sorry -up late last night and it looks like I forgot to add that after
adding write to the security properties on the main page also uncheck
"create folders/append data" via view/edit for this folder, subfolder, and
files. That will leave you with two special permissions entries for that
group - one for folder, subfolder, and files and one for files only. I did
test this out on a machine and it may do what you want. --- Steve
