View Full Version : Remote administration

Doug
I have ended up with 3 Dell computers, preloaded with Win2k SP3, that do not
allow me to remotely administer other computers on the network. I am using
either my logon which has admin levels or the actual administrator logon
that is common on all systems.

I can get to the 'Computer Management' console and can connect to other
computers, but when attempting to perform any function I get the error
message that I am logged into a account that does not have access to
'computer name' and am presented with a dialog for a logon.

I then attempt to logon with a known admin logon, (works fine on any other
system) and get - "Cannot display objects from this location because of the
following error: The credentials supplied conflict with an existing set of
credentials. "

This only happens on these particular Dell units that came in with Win2k SP3
installed. Surely there is a setting or registry entry that fixes this. It
is anoying that since I inherited one of these systems that I cannot
remotely administer the network as needed.

Thanks,

Doug

Is the ms03-039 patch at least installed? You really need that and get SP4
too.

Doug,

For the latter problem (conflicting credentials), try disconnecting any
mapped drives first and see if that fixes the problem.

Ok, I have installed SP4 and installed every other security update
available. Same problem. I can go into Computer Administration and connect
to any network computer. I can see as much detail as I desire. Only when I
opt to make a change do I get the same error as listed below.

Also, it makes no difference if I have a drive mapped or not. Same issue if
no drives are mapped. Login is still not allowed.

Still needing help.

Thanks,

Doug

before running MMC and the computer mgmt console, connect to the ADMIN$
share on the remote computer:

net use /u:remotecomp\Administrator \\remotecomp\ADMIN$

that way when you select a remote computer in the computer mgmt console,
you are granted administrative rights and you can modify what you want.
