View Full Version : read only attribute

jack
I have a new folder where the read only attribute is
marked and I can't remove it

I have tried attrib -r -s and it doesn't work

The security options under properties don't seem to work
either

Suggestions?

Make sure you are logged on as an administrator ["net user username" and check group
membership]. Do you get any error messages? What is the problem with the security
folder? If the boxes are grayed out that means you have inherited permissions or you
may not have permission to change permissions though any administrator can always
take ownership which will give them the right to change permissions. --- Steve

Will the read only attribute always show as being checked,
regardless on the actual security, or does the read only
attribute ever show as being unchecked.

Looks like the problem was with folder name "program
files" it did not like the space between "program"
and "files" when installing the default file location from
Microsoft Business Solutions Great Plains

I removed the space and it worked, howevr I can concerned
why the attribute on all the folders show "read only"

I already changed the security so there is not
inheritance, I am logged in as administrator, and none of
the security boxes are greyed out except "special
permissions"

The attribute UI you're seeing doesn't mean "read only". It means "neither
'read only' nor 'not read only' has been selected". It's trying to show you
a tri-state using a checkbox. It's really really non-intuitive UI and I
hope it changes in future releases of the OS.

Attrib will tell you whether the attribute is set or not.
