View Full Version : AD - Computer Policy

Carl Hilton
OK, I set up an AD COMPUTER Policy in my domain to set the DNS servers in IP
configuration... Now, I have a laptop that is connected to a different
network, and can not preform DNS lookup since it is connected to a network
that can not access those DNS servers.... How can I change this while I am
away from my AD Domain?

Thanks
Calr

In W2K, if you are not statically configuring tcp/ip then you can use a dhcp
server/scope to assign tcp/ip configuration including dns servers. If you use dhcp,
then that laptop can obtain the correct tcp/ip info while connected to the other
network assuming it uses dhcp. Otherwise you may need to reconfigure your tcp/ip
settings manually for each network or use a utility that can do it for you such as
netsh or a third party program. Windows XP Pro has the ability to configure
alternate tcp/ip configurations such as one static and one dhcp.--- Steve

My DHCP server does issue a good DNS as seen by ipconfig /all... However
when I try nslookup, I see the system trying to query the DNS servers set by
my computer policy.... I am running WXPpro. I have also tried to manually
inserting DNS and that did not work.

OK. Since you are running XP Pro, you will have to disable the Group Policy setting
that is telling it what dns servers to use as that will override any other
configuration. If it is configured locally you can use gpedit.msc and then go to
computer configuration/administrative templates/network/dns client - dns servers and
set it to disabled and reboot your machine. If it is done at the
domain/Organizational Unit level then it will have to be disabled at the container
level where your XP Pro computer is located or move it to an OU where that policy can
be disabled. --- Steve

Thanks, but it was at the Domain level and I was not logging in to the
domain. I did fix it by deleting it from the registry, then I will delete if
from the Domain GPO when I next log into the domain.
