My question is if I install the latest service pack do I
have to install all the critical patches? On several
computers I had SP4 installed and when I run the auto
update it recognized some tweny critical updates to be
installed. I thought the critical updates are part of
service packs. Any information to educate me is
appreciated.

Service packs are a collection of hotfixes and updates that are released in
a single package for ease of administration and deployment.

Any hotfixes/patches/updates that are released -after- a Service Pack has
been released will still need to be installed, since they were not included
in the Service Pack release.

So if Windows 2000 Service Pack 5 (disclaimer: there is no such monster at
this moment) is released on July 20th, and a hotfix is released on July
30th, you would need to install both the latest Service Pack, as well as any
subsequent hotfixes.
